The Rage
An
Original Horror Motion Picture Soundtrack
After
creating soundtracks to movies that don't exist for the last 10+ years, we
actually have a picture to go along with the music this time around.
Since Midnight Syndicate has been able to create their own visions and
storylines to set their music to up until this point, I awaited the release of
The Rage soundtrack with a bit of cautious anticipation. This was a slightly
different ball game and I didn't know what to expect from a soundtrack written
for another person's story.
To set the record straight, I never doubted that it would sound great. With more
than several "unofficial" soundtracks under their belt, I knew these guys knew
how to write horror music. I just wondered how much their style would change
when composing for an actual motion picture... especially one that they had not
created themselves.
My "fears" were laid to rest as soon as I heard the "Theme from The Rage". I
knew I was in familiar territory here. Then came "Injecting the Formula" which
kicked it up more than a notch. This is an intense piece quite different from
previous Midnight Syndicate offerings, but terrific nonetheless. Then there's
"Dr. V's Theme" which sounds like it could have come right from any of their
past albums.
While the CD overall actually sounds like a movie score (rightfully so) and a
bit different from their previous CDs, most of the music still has that
"Midnight Syndicate" feel to it, and that's my favorite part of it. I'll proudly
play it with the rest of MS CDs. ~JM

Gates of
Delirium
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here
Are you looking for that Halloween music that can give you a fright?
Are you hungering for the music that gives chills and is right with the moon in
the dead of night?
Are you tired of those $3.99 Halloween CD’s you find at your local grocery
store?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you've come to the right
place. So, now, sit back, relax, and dim the lights as we take you on a journey
through an abandoned insane asylum. Be warned that once you have arrived, you'll
never be able to see the sun ever again. Every song from the first to the last
sends chills down the spine of the unwary listener. As the CD progresses we are
treated to sounds of wailings as we hear imprisoned souls as they cry out in
pain as they suffer the agony of their tormenters. "Room 47" is where you feel
the pain of the soul that is confined to this blighted place. Beware, once you
have arrived, you never get out alive. Highly recommended. ~MDF

The 13th
Hour
An
Eerie Treat for the Imagination
The name Midnight Syndicate has become synonymous with incredible creepy,
haunting, atmospheric soundscapes, and for good reason. Edward Douglas and Gavin
Goszka have a highly noteworthy ability to combine ominously elegant sound
effects and eerie, ethereal orchestrations into a memorable mélange that is most
certainly a treat for the ears and the imagination.
The Thirteenth Hour takes the listener on a tour of a haunted Victorian mansion,
the home of the doctor who founded Haverghast Asylum (which is the setting for
Gates of Delirium), "a house with a sinister history." Conjuring images of those
whose souls are not at rest, Edward and Gavin have scored yet another
masterpiece complete with a seamless blend of gothic themes and brooding
melodies sure to tickle even the most discernable listener.
Among the guest vocalists are Lily Lane, the lead singer from Lazy Lane, and
Mary-Kate Douglas, Edward's two year old daughter, who is the ghostly child
voice on the track "Footsteps in the Dust." Both lend a degree of unearthly
melancholy that eviscerates both dread and reverence.
This is most definitely my favorite Midnight Syndicate release to date. The
Thirteenth Hour is highly recommended for Halloween, or any other time of the
year when one feels like dimming the lights, lighting some candles, and letting
one's imagination run wild with ghoulish delight! ~CT

Vampyre
A new
favorite in Gothic Horror music
I
can't emphasize this enough. This thing is awesome. Comparisons with Lee
Blaske's album "Behind The Day: Journey Of A Vampire" (also excellent) are
inevitable because both that album and this one are beautifully written. Really
though, all similarity kind of stops right there. Whereas Lee Blaske's "Behind
The Day: Journey Of A Vampire" uses soft and erotic gentle narration and
beautiful melodies to tell a somewhat dark and eerie love story, Midnight
Syndicate's "Vampyre: Symphonies From The Crypt" goes straight for the jugular
with eerie, creepy and very sinister sounding music that has no spoken words and
will really make you feel as if you are walking into a nightmare, about to face
your deepest fear. This is definitely music that can make you imagine a film or
story in your head, and can paint rather scary or ominous pictures in your mind
In short, if you love things that make you feel like you are hearing bumps and
groans in the night, this album is the one for you. If you like things that can
make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, and yet can soothe you and draw
you in with incredible beauty, get this album and enjoy it to your heart's
content. I know I enjoyed this album. In fact I loved it. ~JR

Out of the
Darkness
More
Art for the Ears
Yes, Out of the Darkness is a Retrospective CD of the past works of Midnight
Syndicate. The remixes of past efforts of tracks from "Born of the Night" and
Realm of Shadows" are notably cleaner and fuller on this CD showing a growth as
artists that Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka truly are. I must admit that my
favorite remixes are 'Solemn Reflections' (the Harpsicord at the end is most
luscious!)'Into the Abyss' is much stronger than the original as it flows so
freely that you can imagine yourself flying with the music over crashing waves!
'Masque of Sorrow' has an extra emotional quality to it that is brought out in
the new arrangement. There are also some previously un released tracks on this
CD worth mentioning. A new piece by Gavin Goszka called "Prisoner of Time' has a
forelorn but beautiful sadness to it that is probally my favorite track on this
CD. However, the tracks by Edward Douglas, 'Scenes from The Dead Matter' and
'Journey into Dementia' from his previous forays in movie making give me insight
as to what we can expect later this year from this Dynamic Duo as they are set
to score two new Horror Movies! This, to me, has been a long time coming and is
about to come full circle for them and I couldn't be any happier! AS far as the
previously mentioned "Born of the Night" and "Realm of Shadows" CDs...seeing how
these two are no longer available, "Out of the Darkness" provides the best of
these two CDs into one! ~AR
A
Gold Star in the Midnight Syndicate Series
What can anyone say about a compendium of the best sounds from Midnight
Syndicate's existing works but 'WOW'! I've been a listener for a relatively
short time, but after being introduced to their sound images by my son when he
worked one of the specialty stores one October, I've been a totally hooked and
avid collector, anticipating each release, and never being disappointed. Gavin
and Edward don't just create music; its mind candy for the darkness that thrills
and draws you into its embrace, not letting go until the last sigh or refrain
makes you realize you're a prisoner to it and loving it! It's the Goth that
lives in all of us, ladies and gentlemen. Enjoy the ride! ~BP

Realm of
Shadows
Midnight Syndicates third release, Realm of Shadows, manages to tweak every
subtle dark sound and electronic nuance in this as well as their other
recordings that makes listening almost addictive. The cover art is once again
created by the fine dark gothic artist, Joseph Vargo, who also has a part to
play in the recording with his narration of "Prophecy." While other bands are
looking for ways to make dark music repetitively bump and grind for the dance
floor crowds, Midnight Syndicate creates gloomy music to make you think you are
hearing bumps and groans in the night. These rich tonal textures are best
appreciated after dark when you are alone and is absolutely essential listening
for all the creatures of the night. The entire body of work conveys such a
panorama of mental imagery that one cannot help but feel darkly creative while
it is playing. This particular disc seems a bit more solidified with a story
line which graces the inside cover. The premise is that we have wandered upon a
desolate village known as Ravens Hollow where on the eve of a great storm all
the townsfolk were swept away. No one knows what ever happened to these folks,
however, "travelers returning from the area brought with them strange tales of a
solitary light that shone like a beacon from amidst the distant ruins" of the
deserted castle within this desolate village. Midnight Syndicate encapsulates a
good haunting sound that puts them miles ahead of what many are trying to
create. These tracks are intended for continuous playing from start to finish
and will most likely appeal to audiences who are avid readers who also have an
astute imagination. "Realm of Shadows" ranks with the epitome of the best in
instrumental gothic music and is not only a steal for the minor purchase price
but also a priceless edition to ones dark music collection. If your humble abode
is decorated with all fine things dark and morbid, then the final accompaniment
and lasting touch is playing this music in the background. If orchestrated
scary, haunting soundtrack style music is your speed, then you cannot go wrong
with this disc. ~ Gothic Topic Magazine

Dungeons and

Wonderful Background Music
I
had heard this band was doing this a few months back and went out to find older
CDs to listen to; I got hooked. I even found a nice hole in the wall store where
I live in Philly called Dancing Ferret that I went looking for and almost didn't
find. No real advertising and easy to over look but a gem worth rooting out in
Philadelphia. I started my collecting there and I keep going back when I have a
little extra cash to blow on experiments. I have yet to get something I haven't
liked from this place on 5th just up from South, but I digress. This particular
CD has some wonderful tracks to play while gaming or planning to game or even
thinking about gaming. It's a great CD from a great band. Their earlier CDs lend
a more Ravenloft atmosphere but this one is appropriate for most campaigns. If
you're a d20 GM looking for some killer music to put in the background for your
next Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Scarred Lands, etc. session, look no further,
this is what you need. Great artwork and great music combine to make this a CD I
am proud to own. Bottom line, a great instrumental CD that adds just the right
ambience to virtually any gaming session. ~MTS

Darklore Manor
An invitation
"Woe befalls all who dwell within Darklore Manor, for
those who have met their fate within this blighted place are cursed to forever
wander its unhallowed halls."
A magnificent treasure found, a veritable key to Darklore Manor. Traveling
through the thick foliage of black forest underneath the moon's gaze, the fog
increases as you near the ominous Mansion - at the iron gate, a phantasmal
gentleman beckons one to enter the gloriously gloomy estate... and enter we
will... there is no turning back. A strange chanting fills your mind as vertigo
overtakes the consciousness, the shadows deepen beyond the creaking door, as the
candelabrum is lit, and now into the labyrinthine hallways.
The music is replete with a mystical ambience flowing to take you into this
infamous legend. The booklet is spooktacular in its artistry, relating the tale
as well as poetry. As revealed by a yellowed scroll, seems Mr. Damon Darklore
had been experimenting with some Dark Sorcery, uncovered by the swinging
bookcase which leads into a secret chamber. A wonderful surprise awaits on track
21, so keep listening. The astute will discover the interactive booklet contains
various clues and indications relating to both the story and the music itself.
Travel back in time to witness the events that occurred once upon a time in the
theatre of your mind, allowing the dread muses to rise. Darklore Manor is a
welcomed addition to aurally haunt one's own 'unhallowed halls". ~DB

Necronomicon
The ultimate Lovecraft
soundtrack
As a longtime fan of
H.P.Lovecraft, I must applaud Nox Arcana for creating a fantastic epic album
that truly captures the brooding horrors of the Cthulhu Mythos. Aside from
listening to this album for sheer dark enjoyment, I've been game-master of
several of Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu campaigns for the past ten years, and I've
used different soundtrack music in the past, but most of it just comes across as
background ambience. Nox Arcana's Necronomicon however, is in my opinion the
ultimate Lovecraft soundtrack, perfectly suited for my needs. With nearly a full
hour of music, the song lengths range from 2 to 4 minutes and are perfect to
accent your gaming experience as introductions to new areas and specific
encounters throughout the game. The narratives work well to describe and invoke
the various Great Old Ones and add a real sense of foreboding to the music. All
of the classic Lovecraftian chants are also included, as well as the
ultra-sinister "Ritual of Summoning," which contains some chilling
backward-masked incantations. I also recommend the band's first album, Darklore
Manor, which is set in a creepy abandoned Victorian mansion that has a sinister
history. The music conveys a feeling of decayed elegance and brooding darkness
and really captures that creepy Innsmouth feel. Long live Cthulhu and Nox Arcana!

Winter’s Knight
Christmas music with a
twist - True winter magic
Now this is the CD
for those of you who are sick to the gills with the traditional Christmas music
you hear in department stores and want music with depth. This is a wonderful
album that brings an edge of darkness to the Christmas night and to all your
other nights.
Many artists claim that their music is haunting, but no one delivers the goods
like Nox Arcana. Everything about this enchanting concept album is a true work
of genius, from the symphonic instrumentals, Gregorian chanting and acoustic
guitar melodies, to the beautiful booklet that is filled with glorious artwork
and antique manuscripts of poetry and sheet music. The 21 tracks are mainly
original instrumental pieces that vary between piano, harpsichord, pipe organ
and orchestra strings, but the band also delivers several traditional carols
with beautiful vocals and soaring gothic choirs. There is a definite feel of
melancholy through most of this CD, however the album ends with several powerful
and uplifting tracks. This sets the perfect mood for their musical story line of
dark angel who tells his ghostly tale of winter magic in order to guide lost
souls through their darkest hour. Fans of Enya will love the enchanting sounds
of "Ebonshire" and "Crystal Forest." Songs like "Phantom Toccata," "Gregorian
Hymn" and "Veni, Veni, Emannuel" will make you feel as if you are standing in
the ruins of an ancient cathedral while ghosts from the past surround you.
"Reflections of Long Ago" and "Lullaby" offer two unforgettably haunting music
box melodies. The addition of guest vocalists make Nox Arcana's versions of
"Coventry Carol" and "Past Time with Good Company" real standout tracks, and
their powerful rendition of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is the definitive
gothic version of this classic carol. This excellent CD is beautiful music for
any time of year, but listening to it on cold, snowy nights is true winter
magic. ~LR

Transylvania
Bloody Wonderful
Nox Arcana (what a
perfect name)again show their mastery of Gothic sensibilities with an album that
simply drips atmosphere . . . of the dank, clammy, foggy kind, cut with the
lethal swoop of leathery wings and sudden, despairing shrieks.
I'm too musicalogically ignorant to analyze the music, but in it sum effect it
is very impressive, entertainingly sinister yet leavened with a sly sense of
humor. (DARK SHADOWS fans will get a chuckle from co-composer William
Piotrowski's portrait.) This is not to imply that the music is done
tongue-in-cheek, for it's pure Gothic. It's just that Nox Arcana don't seem to
mind slipping in a wink here and there, just to let you know it's all in good
fun.
Like in their album NECRONOMICON, there is a sort of Easter egg hidden at the
end of the last track, so be sure to let the CD play out. Don't just turn off
the CD player when the track comes to its "official" end, or you'll miss some of
the fun.
Also worthy of note is the extremely attractive packaging of this CD (which is
true of all of Nox Arcana's releases). Co-composer Joseph Vargo's Gothic artwork
fills the accompanying booklet and also the CD itself. These guys definitely
give you your money's worth, both aurally and visually.
Highly recommended to everyone who has fond musical memories of James Bernard,
Franz Waxman, Frank Skinner, Hans J. Salter, Herman Stein, Bernard Herrmann, and
so many other wonderful composers who have left their superb mark on so many
classic horror films. ~JS

Carnival of Lost Souls
The Devil's Carnivale
The diabolical Ring
Leader bids you come forward, you are welcomed to immerse yourself within the
dark carnival worlde of olde, a phantom circus of wonders and horrors wherein
patrons' curiosities become overwhelming, to sometimes gain the better of them
and become part of the sideshow...
Bewitching orchestrations accompany the wayfarer, spellbinding the observer to
enter the fetters of ominous tents containing myriad spectacles of nightmarish
fane. Compelling oddities possess the mind further into the darkness displayed
before your eyes...
Tricks and treats lay waiting 'round every corner, collected the world over from
timeless eras, echoing ghostly whispers to present the greatest show on earth...
An absolutely enchanting opus; besides the brilliant orchestrations, Carnival of
Lost Souls manages to conjure the underlying sensation of this Magical world to
create a haunting frame which enhances the experience ever more. One could
almost perceive the sights, scents and sounds therein - from laughing phantom
children to the crack of the lion-tamer's whip, to the fortune teller's
enthralling reading, and the breathing calliope, played as if with a life of its
own...
Freaks! Jesters! Exotic creatures from foreign lands... Pay the toll at the
gate, at the mere cost of your soul... this is The Devil's Carnivale, The Circus
Diabolique... you will never want to leave... ~DB
Magnificent sound tapestry of gothic horror!
This CD is Nox Arcana's
best to date, and that is saying something, since all of Nox Arcana's
productions are first rate.
If you are new to the music of Nox Arcana, it is basically a gothic horror
novel, told through the medium of music and special effects. Think Dracula, Wolf
Man, Frankenstein; that kind of thing. But instead of film or video, the tale is
woven through masterfully crafted music, with special effects judiciously added
to enhance the mood and effect. The result is an auditory journey through a
nightmare world.
Imagine yourself in an old-time carnival, complete with tents, animal shows,
fortune tellers, and assorted side shows and attractions. Except something is
not quite right. From the very beginning, you get the feeling you are being
watched. So you decide to sneak back in after closing time. Somehow, the
carnival comes back to life... but maybe "life" is not quite the right word.
Welcome to the Carnival of Lost Souls.
This is definitely not elevator music, and probably not music to drive your car
by, either. It draws you into its world and captivates your imagination. It's a
bit like old time radio; you provide the video from within your own mind, which
makes it all the more vivid.
On the other hand, if you own either the "Gothic Tarot" or "Madame Endora's
Fortune Cards", here is the perfect music to read them by! Indeed, Madame
herself makes a special appearance on the CD; two actually. As mentioned by
another reviewer, don't hit the off button when the last track goes quiet; be
patient, there is more, well worth the wait.
